ARTIST STATEMENT
As an artist, my aim is to create pieces that delight the viewer. It is my hope that when others view my work, they have a positive visceral response that brings calmness, appreciation, and excitement.
My art is inspired by the beauty God has created all around us. By using a variety of mediums and techniques, my work explores the varied aspects of nature. Through the combination of design elements and methods, the works evoke emotional, visual, and tactile responses in the viewer. Quotes are often brought to mind during the creative process and are reflected in the titles of the works.
During my years as a special education teacher in the public school system, I found that students and adults alike responded positively to art. My classroom was filled with calming art and I offered many creative activities, ranging from painting, creative problem solving, writing, deconstruction and reconstruction. By giving students permission to create or just rest, frantic minds slowed, anxious spirits were calmed, and individuals were restored to a state of self-control with renewed confidence and ability to return successfully to the required school task at hand. I believe that each person is significant and has a God-ordained life purpose which can only be realized when one’s mind is calm. Creativity is one way to achieve this state.
ABOUT ME
The first 20 years of my career I worked in the publishing industry, initially in magazine/print design and layout, then freelanced as a graphic designer and illustrator. After that I enjoyed a 20-year public school teaching career in the area of Special Education. Since retiring from my teaching career, my passion for making art has exploded. I have enjoyed completing a number of commissions for clients and teach weekly classes in my studio, affectionately called “The Wool Room” by friends and family.
